THE ART OF GRASS-FED
Generations of Experience
Healthy animals… healthy humans.
The Farm
One of Ontario’s few Grass-fed and pasture-raised cattle operations, Walnut Hill is located in Rockwood, Guelph Eramosa Township. The farm is 210 acres in size and contain old world forest and provincially significant wetlands. We pasture raise our cattle and on grass hay in the winter.
The De Grandis family has been in the business of raising cattle and ducks for 60 years. Stephanie, dog pal Night and great farm help have taken over the family farm that was established originally 1889. We pride ourselves in making our opinion heard when it comes to protecting Ontario’s farmland and our environment. Our recent letter to the Ford government about Bill 229 states we need our environment and water sheds protected from development and aggregate extraction.
Pasture-Raised Beef
The pasture-raised label indicates that our animals spend most of their lives on the range or free ranging as opposed to being in feedlots. This label is important and some grass-fed beef are still fed in feedlots and not allowed to range naturally. Consumers should look for this label.
Our cattle range throughout the spring, summer and fall on rich pastures that are fertilized naturally. Manure from cattle grazing is incorporated into the soil throughout these seasons enriching the microbial content and chemical composition of the soil. Soil fertility is regulated not by individual minerals in the soil but the overall balance or ratio. Cows can taste the difference in nitrate levels and sugar levels in plants and they can also see the differences in light refraction between healthy and unhealthy plants. Cows know what they need to sustain good health.
No chemical fertilizers are used on our pastures.
